It’s been awhile since I’ve drawn, due to a mix of limited time and desire. Bare with me as I work my way back to the feel of the graphic pen.

All that being said, I’d like to introduce you to my friend Steve Moran. This (crudely) drawn version of Steve is how I will always remember him—a bit heavy, a bit drunk and a lot awesome. I will likely refine this drawing of the elder Moran, as long term I intend on him becoming a regular in a comic I’d like to draw.

Over the next few days (or weeks), I will be illustrating some of the characters and will keep improving the work until I feel comfortable with the look of each. So if you feel this sucks, have no fear, it will suck less in about a week.

I’d say I’m 90% done with this sketch of Clark Kent getting his super-ness on, but I wanted to test out coloring. I haven’t worked any of the shading effects in and they will certainly be added for the final product. So while incomplete, I wanted to see where I stand and since I didn’t run crying into the bathroom, I figured you all could take a look.

If I’m being honest with myself, I’d admit that the jacket annoys the crap out of me. It’s too bulky and Superman isn’t meant to pack the pounds on like Santa. The rest of my complaints with the piece should be fixed with the shadings because a lot of his features need definition. Ultimately I’m pleased with the progress of my first test piece using the graphic pen/tab.

The drawing clearly is amateur because, well, I’m an amateur. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, feel free to chime in.

I finally received and set up my Bamboo Pen/Tablet so that all of my drawing is digital. It took a while to get used to drawing on a small rectangle and having it appear on a screen above you. Once I got the hang of that, I started crafting my first true work.

I’ve decided that I’ll post progress reports since this will likely take me 1-2 weeks to complete, working in hour long sittings. I don’t want to say what this is a drawing of, but that will become more clear as I make some headway.

So far this is the bare bones of the head, with some outline of the hair and hooded sweatshirt. This drawing will ultimately be full color with shading effects, but it’s a fairly lengthy process as I’m adjusting to LAP (life after paper).

Thankfully this is an online blog so you people can’t throw tomatoes at my work. If you give me time, however, I do think you’ll like the finished product.

A practice run on a yellow sticky pad for a larger tribute piece I will be working on this week. Obviously there are some kinks to iron out, but that’s the trouble with a pen—the mistakes are hard to hide. You could say I’m on super hero kick at the moment. I put this together with a pen, then tried to add a splash of color with Photoshop. I’m going to pick up my new Wacord Bamboo (graphic pen) on Wednesday, so hopefully the quality of my work will improve.

Based the drawing off one of the Dark Knight movie posters. I started with just a pen, then I switched to a pencil for the shading and smudged the edges of the eye to give it a better feel. Lastly I imported the jpg (taken with my iPhone) into Photoshop to give it some red for the playing card and lips. It could have been better, but i doomed myself a bit with the pen to start.
